Pioneering Spirit: Are You First?

Hello again, parents!

I wanted to take advantage of this time to introduce you to a couple colleagues in my office who run an absolutely awesome program called Pioneer Scholars. Many of your students are have come through the Pioneer program (if they’re upperclassmen) and many of them are enrolled to begin this fall as freshmen. Each year, we in the ARC have the privelege of watching this program, but more importantly, the students in it, grow, and work hard and succeed, and I wanted to give Amy Siegel and Andrew Schroeder, the program’s two co-driectors, the opportunity to tell you a bit about it. If you know any students who are first-generation college students (see definition below), get them signed up! I can’t even explain to you how much you do not want them to miss this.

Amy and Andrew…

It’s great to see so many students make their parents proud by being in the first generation of their families to work towards attaining a four-year degree.  Whether a brother or sister has graduated from college before them your son or daughter would still be considered a first-generation student.

At Bellarmine,  it’s an exciting time as we head into the fourth year of our Pioneer Scholars Program( http://www.bellarmine.edu/arc/pioneer.aspx).  We’re thrilled to have a program like this at BU that engages and supports our freshmen first-generation students.  It’s been quite enjoyable to see the program grow with time and get better in the way it ties our freshmen into BU life.  The Pioneer Program does quite a lot, from guiding freshmen through the many ups and downs of first year to providing opportunities to be a part of many of the most entertaining events on and off campus .  Additionally, in the first three years the academic achievement for those involved in the program has been significantly higher than those who have not participated.

Already 170 of the 270 first generation students have signed-up for Pioneers.  If your son or daughter hasn’t had the chance, there’s still time to do so.  Please encourage them to sign-up or contact us if they have any questions.  They can contact either of the program directors, Amy Siegel, asiegel@bellarmine.edu , or Andrew Schroeder, aschroeder@bellarmine.edu.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact us.  We’re looking forward to another great year!

Thanks Amy and Andrew!
